Simple assault charged

Virginia Allen, 20, of 11 Harbor St., was charged Aug. 12 with simple assault after a female juvenile with minor injuries was brought to the police station and a complaint was filed, police said.

Allen was held overnight at the police station and arraigned the next morning at Newport District Court, police said.

Drunk driving charged

Scott A. Sherman, 37, of Newport, was charged Aug. 18 with first offense drunk driving with a blood alcohol level of .10-.15 after he was stopped on Route 138 eastbound for driving erratically, police said.

A pre-trial hearing was scheduled for Aug. 29 at Newport District Court, police said.
