Volunteers needed for elderly, children Child & Family Services has an immediate need for Friendly Visitors who visit the homebound elderly on a regular basis. There are elders confi ned to their homes in Tiverton, Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport who are waiting to be matched with a volunteer. These seniors have very few social contacts and would welcome a visit from someone who cares about them. Volunteers might chat, read, play cards or take their senior for a ride. However, the most important consideration is to be a good listener. Hours are flexible, but a one-year commitment is preferred. Before making a commitment, the volunteer is introduced to the elder so, together, they can decide if it looks like a good match. There is also a need for babysitters on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8 p.m. while parents are at the Supportive Housing program. Call or e-mail Landa Patterson, coordinator of Volunteer Services, at 848- 4210 or lpatterson@childandfamilyri.com for more information. |
